Mt. Liupan towers in southern Ningxia and is known as the Green Island on the Loess Plateau for its lush vegetation and beautiful scenery.

Mt. Liupan has a pleasant climate. In 1935 when Chairman Mao Zedong led his Red Army tramping over the mountain, he wrote the famous poem Mt. Liupan; Genghis Khan lived here on his way conquering the Western Xia. The Jingheyuan Scenic Spot near the mountain is a summer resort. On the mountain there are the Xumi Grottoes, an evidence of the flourishing commerce on the ancient Silk Road.
