Located in Fengqiao Town 3.5 kilometers west of Suzhou City, Hanshan Temple was built during the Liang period (502-520) of the Southern Dynasties. The temple was once under the direction of eminent monks Hanshan and Shide of the Tang Dynasty, hence its name.
The temple was so well-known because of the poem Mooring at Maple Bridge for the Night written by the Tang-dynasty poet Zhang Ji. Visitors, especially young people from Japan, are familiar with the temple because they have learned it from the poem in their textbook. The bell in Hanshan Temple rings on New Year's eve, bringing visitors back to the Tang Dynasty some 1,000 years ago.
