The Great Mosque


The mosque built in the 12th century in Huajue lane Xi'an is one of the four oldest and largest Islamic mosques in china. It is better known in Xi'an as the great Mosque. The style of the mosque is a splendid blending of traditional Chinese and Arabic architecture. As early as in the eight century envoys and merchants came to Chang'an from the West by the Silk Road and many settled down. The descendants constitute the local Hui (Muslims) ethnic group. The mosque was built by the Hui people. It covers 12,500-floor space of more than 4,000 square meters.
