Yungang Buddhist Caves

The caves are situated in the southern cliff of Wuzhou Mountain, about 16 kilometers west of Datong Proper. Today, 53 caves have survived, containing 51,000 stone statues. The caves dating back to the Northern Wei Dynasty, have a history of more than 1,500 years. The carvings display the clothing, building, musical instrument, dance and decorations of ancient times, providing important information for research into China's ancient culture and arts.
